Understanding 5052 and 5083 Aluminum
5052 and 5083 are non-heat-treatable 5xxx-series aluminum-magnesium alloys. Strength is developed mainly through work hardening rather than precipitation heat treatment. They are valued for corrosion resistance and welding performance, especially in sheet, plate and fabricated structures.
5052: Forming and General Fabrication
5052 is commonly selected for sheet-metal enclosures, panels, cabinets, covers, brackets, tanks and general fabricated components. It offers a useful balance of corrosion resistance, formability and weldability. Bending radius, grain direction, temper and cosmetic requirements should be defined for formed parts.
5083: Higher-Strength Welded Structures
5083 is widely associated with marine, transportation, pressure-containing and heavy fabricated structures where higher strength and corrosion resistance are required. Material temper, welding procedure, joint design and service temperature must be reviewed for the application.

Important Note for Extrusion Projects
5052 and 5083 are principally sourced as sheet or plate for fabrication. They are not the normal first choice for complex custom extrusion profiles. For an extruded enclosure, frame or channel, a 6xxx-series alloy may be more practical, while 5052 or 5083 sheet and plate can be used for end plates, covers or welded structures.
Finishing and Inspection
State the required mill finish, brushing, coating, anodizing, cosmetic faces and acceptable marks. For welded structures, drawings should identify weld symbols, distortion limits, inspection and any required qualification or test documentation.
