5xxx · Magnesium alloy

5052 aluminium — composition, properties and extrusion notes

The strongest common non-heat-treatable sheet alloy, and the marine standard.

How it compares

Relative to the other grades we extrude. This is a selection aid, not a specification.

  • Extrudability Fair
  • Machinability Good
  • Weldability Excellent
  • Corrosion resistance Excellent
  • Anodising response Good
  • Formability Very good

Mechanical properties

Temper Tensile (MPa) Yield (MPa) Elongation (%) Hardness (HB)
O 195 75 25 47
H32 230 195 12 60

Typical values for extruded product. Minimum guaranteed values depend on temper and product form — the mill certificate governs.

Composition limits

Element Limit (%)
Si 0.25
Fe 0.40
Cu 0.10
Mn 0.10
Mg 2.2–2.8
Cr 0.15–0.35
Zn 0.10
Al remainder

Single figures are maxima; ranges are the permitted window.

Working with this alloy

Density
2.68 g/cm³
Common tempers
O, H32, H34

Physical properties

Property Value
Thermal conductivity 138 W/m·K
Melting range 607–650 °C
Electrical conductivity 35 % IACS

When to use it

Best corrosion resistance of the common alloys, particularly in salt water. Not heat-treatable, so strength comes from work hardening.

Typical applications

  • Marine structures and boat hulls
  • Fuel and hydraulic tanks
  • Pressure vessels
  • Appliance and electronics chassis
