Surface Finishes
Compare the finishes
Thickness figures are the range you can put on a drawing. Every one of these can be quoted against a named standard; the page for each finish says which.
| Finish | Process type | Thickness | Corrosion | Colour range | Edge coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anodising | Conversion coating | 5–25 µm – 0.5–7 µm | Excellent | Very good | Good |
| Electrophoretic coating | Electrodeposited organic coating | 15–25 µm – 25–40 µm | Excellent | Fair | Excellent |
| Mechanical finishes | Surface texture, no coating | No film – No film | Limited | Limited | Fair |
| Powder coating | Applied organic coating | 60–90 µm – 80–120 µm | Very good | Excellent | Good |
| Wood grain transfer | Sublimation transfer over powder | 70–120 µm total | Very good | Good | Fair |
Ratings are relative to the other finishes here and are a selection aid, not a specification.
Finish pages
Anodising
An aluminium oxide layer grown out of the metal itself — hard, integral and never peels.
Electrophoretic coating
Paint deposited by electric current, so every edge and recess gets the same film.
Mechanical finishes
Brushing, polishing and blasting change the surface texture without adding a coating.
Powder coating
The widest colour and texture range of any finish we apply, with a tough cured film.
Wood grain transfer
A photographic wood or stone texture sublimated into a powder coat — the look of timber on an aluminium profile.
