6xxx · Magnesium-silicon alloy

6061 aluminium — composition, properties and extrusion notes

The general-purpose structural alloy: strong, weldable, machinable and corrosion resistant.

How it compares

Relative to the other grades we extrude. This is a selection aid, not a specification.

  • Extrudability Good
  • Machinability Very good
  • Weldability Good
  • Corrosion resistance Very good
  • Anodising response Good
  • Formability Good

Mechanical properties

Temper Tensile (MPa) Yield (MPa) Elongation (%) Hardness (HB)
T4 260 145 16 65
T6 310 275 12 95

Typical values for extruded product. Minimum guaranteed values depend on temper and product form — the mill certificate governs.

Property Value
Thermal conductivity 167 W/m·K
Melting range 582–652 °C

When to use it

The default choice when a part has to do several jobs at once. 6061-T6 machines far better than 6063, which is why most CNC aluminium parts start here.

Typical applications

  • Structural frames and brackets
  • Automotive and motorcycle components
  • Machined parts and jigs
  • Pressure vessels and pipelines
