Begin with the thermal system
A heatsink is one part of the thermal path. Define heat load, allowable component temperature, ambient temperature, airflow, orientation and interface material before selecting geometry.
Fin geometry and extrusion limits
More fins do not automatically mean better performance. Very thin, tall or closely spaced fins may be difficult to extrude and can restrict airflow. The fin ratio and spacing should match manufacturing and convection conditions.
Base thickness and heat spreading
The base spreads heat from the source into the fins. A base that is too thin can create temperature gradients, while unnecessary thickness adds mass and cost. Mounting pressure and flatness also matter.
Machining and mounting features
CNC machining can add pockets, threaded holes and mounting faces. Identify critical contact surfaces, flatness, roughness and hole positions. Avoid placing complex machining where tools cannot reach between fins.
Finish and validation
Black anodizing can provide corrosion protection and appearance, but color alone does not replace thermal analysis. Validate the assembled system under realistic airflow, orientation and power conditions.
